Stephen Curry Goes Back to School

The Warriors point guard returns to Davidson

By Jonathan Abrams
Stephen Curry steered his black SUV into a parking spot on the campus of Davidson College, the small liberal arts institution outside of Charlotte, N.C. He stepped out carefully to make sure his white shoes remained that way. It had rained, and the sun will make only a few scarce appearances throughout the day. Curry was bleary-eyed and caught in a mistake that most college students avoid at all costs: He had enrolled in a morning class.
Some NBA players played overseas during the lockout and kept up their basketball acumen. Some made music videos, and others disappeared from the public spotlight. About 45 players, including Curry, resumed college work they brushed aside to become professionally eligible. The trek is not really new. A healthy number of players return to school each summer. But one of the scant benefits of the extended offseason and lockout is that it allowed some players to make real dents in those long-dismissed credits.
Curry is on his way to a long, successful NBA career. He is the kind of baby-faced, good-natured player around which a team can genuinely market itself. A sociology degree is not necessary to make all of that happen. But the gravitational pull between Curry and Davidson is substantial and homey. It is more pronounced in an era of one-and-done players freshly removed from the generation of prep-to-pros. Curry helped put the school on the map, as far as basketball aficionados are concerned, with the school's 2008 run. "Heck yeah, I have," Curry said when asked if he thinks often about walking. "I went to my class's graduation last year. My roommate and some of the other guys I went to school with walked, and I celebrated with them. They have an annual graduation for all the members of the team. I want that."
The NBA, for Curry, embodied a fanciful dream. The degree represented a tangible goal, until the priorities and reality oddly flip-flopped a few years ago. Curry is the son of the sharpshooter Dell Curry. He developed late and could not even convince his father's school, Virginia Tech, to offer a scholarship. Instead, he went to Davidson, where they do laundry for students, tests are unsupervised, and students sign an honor code. The school has produced 23 Rhodes Scholars, but just five NBA players.
When Curry departed for the NBA and the Golden State Warriors after his junior year, he told his parents and coach Bob McKillop that he would return to finish his degree. Or they told him. Sometimes, Curry thinks that McKillop's cursory looks are a sign for him to hurry up, lest he mess with McKillop's pristine graduation rate. "He always gives me this look," Curry said. "I can't tell if he's thinking that in his head, but that's what I think."
On his first day back at Davidson this semester, a professor asked if "Wardell Curry" was present. "Yeah," Curry said meekly to the announcement of his seldom-used first name, "Most people just call me Stephen." And there was the time a student discreetly tried to take his picture in class and the flash blinded Curry. "Were my eyes open?" Curry asked afterward. "Yeah, thanks," the student sheepishly replied.
Curry walked into the student union after exiting his car. He stopped at a computer to check whether a professor had e-mailed back a response to a question. The college activated Curry's e-mail when he reenrolled. He started receiving about four or five e-mails a week soon after. Some students inquired about his availability for pickup games, and others wanted autographs. "I answer the ones that make sense to," he said.
He left the building, unfurled his umbrella again, and walked into Chambers Building. It is the academic hub of the campus and holds most of the classes. The school's enrollment is short of 2,000 people, and, even if you are not all that social, you can learn the names of most people if you stick around for a few years. Imagine Curry here in 2008. He handled the explosion of popularity well. Nearly one in four students plays a sport here, after all. Still, it occasionally unnerved him. Sometimes, he ducked into the basketball offices and hung out there for most of the day. His roommates had to sneak him into his apartment in other moments. Now Curry knows only a handful of students who were freshmen when he left, including the three seniors on this year's team.
He enrolled in three classes this semester: a class on the history of education, a medical sociology class, and today's qualitative research class. The research class is a precursor for Curry's thesis. He is planning to write on the relationship between basketball players and tattoos. He has already polled about five players and drawn a surprising correlation. Nearly all the players1 said they wouldn't have as many tattoos if they weren't in the NBA spotlight, and they certainly wouldn't be as visible, because they believed it would damage their prospects at other employment.
Curry has only one discreet tattoo on the inside of his left wrist. It reads "T.C.C." and stands for trust, commitment, and care. Curry received the tattoo along with four teammates, and it served as their motto. The idea for the thesis arrived while Curry drove to class and tuned into a sports radio show. The show's topic concerned Panthers owner Jerry Richardson apparently asking Cam Newton to refrain from any tattoos or piercings. Curry thought about the many NBA players who would have shattered that rule.
Curry talked about his findings in class and about how the paper should be framed. The class lasted a little over an hour, and Curry sat in a circle of only a dozen students. The size is comparable to the rest of Davidson's courses. The faculty-to-student ratio is about 10-to-1. "I've got some catching up to do," Curry said afterward. "These lockout negotiations have really put a dent in my classes."
He met up with one of the remaining familiar faces after class. Lauren Biggers worked as an assistant director of sports information at the school, and helped handled the onslaught of media requests. She is now in Davidson's alumni department.
"We need to talk about your outfit," Biggers said.
Davidson plays Duke the next day. It is the classic David-against-Goliath matchup, except David is Curry and he no longer plays for the school. Curry debated which team to root for. (His younger brother, Seth, is a junior at Duke.) His wardrobe is taken care of, though. He will wear a red Davidson jersey in the front with Duke colors in the back.
Biggers and Curry grabbed food, which is when Curry met his first adulation of the day. Rosemary Turner, a cafeteria worker, has waited for Curry to show since she last saw him and snapped a few pictures of him. They were now developed, ready to be signed. Curry smiled and autographed a large stack, one after another.
The talk shifted to when Curry will finally graduate.
"2041," Biggers joked.
"It depends on how you would define if everything goes right," Curry said. "Ideally, I really don't know because it could be — the earliest it could be is August. The latest is a dot, dot, dot."
In the afternoon, Curry walked to the Baker Sports Complex. Belk Arena's court is sunken and flanked by two more basketball courts at street level. The men's basketball team often switches with the women's basketball team or the volleyball team for time on the main court. The arena holds more than 5,000 people, but only when the stands from each side are compressed and loom over the action.
Curry mostly worked out during the lockout with fellow NBA Charlotteans such as Antawn Jamison and Anthony Morrow at a facility closer to Charlotte. He decided to practice with Davidson today, an act permissible by the NCAA because he is enrolled in classes. Curry parked his car in the back lot. McKillop forbids players from using the back lot, but an NBA player is afforded some privileges, right?
Not here. Curry will later return to his car having been toilet papered by Steve Rossiter, a former teammate and roommate, also in town. Brendan McKillop, one of Bob McKillop's two sons who played under him here, also watched the practice.
Curry assumed his role on the scout team in practice. Instead of Monta Ellis and David Lee, his teammates were a couple of backups, an assistant coach, and a student manager. In one of the greater ironies of the lockout, Curry played the role of Seth as Davidson prepped for Duke.
Curry, in white shorts and a white shirt that contrasted against Davidson's black jerseys, remained a respectable distance as the coaches huddled the players. The team moved on to drills and McKillop's voice boomed over the screeching shoes. "That's what we need, five guys in the right place at the right time," McKillop instructed on breaking the press. "You can take it direct, you can pull that way, you can push that way, but don't invade his space."
For a while, the NBA player on the court could not be spotted. But then the scout team switched to offense. Curry hit a couple of deep 3-pointers. "Get out," assistant coach Jim Fox told the defense. "All the way out. That's what he'll do."
With the defense stretched out on him, Curry sliced through two defenders and kissed the ball off the very top of the backboard before it flicked through the net. The practice ended, and the team packed for the bus ride to Duke. Curry stayed behind to catch up with Rossiter and Brendan McKillop, who both now live and work in New York. The familial atmosphere is a large juxtaposition to Curry's entrance into the professional world. The Warriors drafted him even though he had never worked out for them. The incumbent star guard, Ellis, immediately announced that a backcourt that consisted of the two would not work.
The sides will reach a sudden agreement to end the lockout in a few days. The movement caught a lot of people off guard, Curry included. The school will allow him to finish his two final examinations, an essay, and the 20-page research paper. Curry will try to complete them during an abbreviated training camp. It is a better option than losing all of the progress he had made. "Once training camp starts, it's going to be pretty demanding," Curry said in a follow-up talk. "I've just got to grind it out." His name will immediately be thrown into a number of trade scenarios. The most prominent talks center around Curry as the main carrot dangled to land Chris Paul. "I've been through this ever since I was drafted," Curry said. "I was drafted, and the next night I was supposed to be in an Amar'e Stoudemire trade. We've had trade rumors around our organization since I've been here. None of that's new to me. But it feels good to be relevant in basketball talks and not just about the lockout."

Sacramento kings should stay

The commissioner was working late on Wednesday, a conference call cutting into his evening commute out of midtown Manhattan. Far from the big city, out in the sticks in Sacramento, David Stern wanted to send word: The NBA isn't letting the Sacramento Kings leave without a fight.

The Maloof brothers had visited his office on Monday, determined for Stern to get between their franchise and city and between the acrimony and the risk of the regrettable resolution of exiting Sacramento. It's turned so nasty between Sacramento and the Maloofs that the Kings owners threw their hands into the air and gave up.

Essentially, they asked Stern: Step down out of the Olympic Tower, take over the new arena initiative and save the Kings in Sacramento.

"The NBA has never done anything to this scope," Stern said.

Maybe that's because the NBA has never had as profound of a franchise crisis as it does now. Stern has called this a "model" franchise in the sport, "a spectacular success story," and there's a genuine urgency for the commissioner's plans to visit Sacramento in early December and begin probing the possibilities with the politicians and developers and Kings ownership.

Make no mistake: The biggest issue in the NBA isn't about toy store basketballs and bad behavior technical fouls, but the stability of its most successful franchises. Sacramento has a league-best streak of 317 sellouts at Arco Arena, which has been the loudest arena in the league and the most anchored to its franchise. Pound for pound, cowbell for cowbell, there's a good case to be made for Sacramento as the best market in the NBA.

So, there's no salvation awaiting the Maloofs and Kings elsewhere, no city that'll ever love this team and cherish it and, yes, support it the way Sacramento has done in good times and bad. It won't be Las Vegas, where the Maloofs run the Palms Casino. Nor Anaheim. Nor St. Louis. Nowhere else.

The Maloofs lost a confusing public vote on a downtown arena initiative last week, a referendum that was never clear to anyone – not the citizens, nor the Maloofs, nor the commissioner. In the end, the campaign was punctuated with allegations that the Kings owners sabotaged the vote because they themselves didn't want to move downtown.

Especially in the West, the climate for public and private arena-stadium partnerships has never been worse. Good relationships go awry over building issues; love affairs between cities and teams turn traumatic. Nothing had ever come between Sacramento and its team – not Garry St. Jean coaching, not Olden Polynice playing center, nothing until this.

The NBA could live with the New Jersey Nets leaving East Rutherford for Brooklyn, but Sacramento is a soul-bearer for the sport, a beacon of possibility for small-market teams. "Some skeptics questioned whether the NBA could succeed in Sacramento," the commissioner remembered. It's flourished there, and it is everyone's responsibility to make sure this unravels no further.

Once, the NBA had a beautiful thing going in Charlotte, but when the city grew to disdain its owner, George Shinn, the people refused to ever vote him the public funding needed to build an arena. Charlotte never should've lost the Hornets, and it's a painful memory that was still on Stern's mind this week.

"It sort of dawned on me in listening that there is really nothing more important than this," Stern said. "Maybe I could have been more helpful in some other cities, like the first time that the Hornets left Charlotte."

If he didn't do enough to save Shinn from his political mess, Stern sounds determined not to make the same mistake with the Maloofs. He goes back with their father, George, to the early 1980s when he owned the Houston Rockets. His kids, Gavin and Joe, were the whiz kids who breathed life into one of the NBA's worst basketball operations. Sacramento was dying for a winner, and the Maloofs gave it to them.

Now this seven-year fight for a new arena to replace Arco has grown acrimonious, and Stern concedes that part of his job here is to "diffuse" the two sides. These are the worst fights in sports now: communities vs. owners, public vs. private funding. The arena issue has also raged in Seattle and Portland, two longtime thriving NBA cities.

Yet nowhere could the Maloofs move the Kings and ever replicate what's happened in Sacramento. Through everything there, the fans are still the loudest in the league and still selling out night after night. Just look at Memphis now. The Grizzlies were a novelty for a couple years, a hot ticket under Jerry West and Hubie Brown, but they're gasping for air now, ranking last in attendance this season.

As a sports town, the whole identity of Sacramento is wrapped up in its pride for the Kings. A recent Sacramento Bee poll found that six out of 10 citizens declared themselves Kings fans. Still, this has turned terrible. Public officials are decrying the Maloofs as duplicitous, and newspaper columnists are taking sides with city officials and developers here, the owners there.

All of it has been polarizing, and all of it needs the commissioner's political savvy and his deft deal-making.

"The Kings and Sacramento are an NBA success story and I'm not interested in seeing the success end in failure," Stern said. "We don't accept that."

The NBA shouldn't now, nor ever. This is a fight the NBA can't lose because here's something no one would've once ever believed about Sacramento:

This is a city the league can't replace.

NBA Conference Finals 2010

NBA Playoffs 2010 Conference Finals
At least one of my previous predictions was right (Celts in 6). Who would’ve thought the other three teams would’ve won in 4 straight. I’m disappointed with the Spurs, or should I be giving more credit to the Suns? I thought the Spurs had what it took.. But I guess I was wrong.
What team is hotter than the Magic? 8-0 in the playoffs, and on a 14 game-win streak? That’s incredible.

Eastern Conference

2. Orlando Magic vs 4. Boston Celtics
I think Charles Barkley is kickin himself in the foot right now, saying “I should’ve stayed with Orlando to win the Eastern Conference Finals.” It is too late…The Cleveland Cavaliers were knocked out by the Celtics last night. I don’t know if the Celtics are trying to shut their doubters or if they’re really playing like they said they would.. It reminds me of the playoffs 4 years ago, when the Spurs won the championship after being named the 6 seed. Everyone wrote the Spurs and Celtics off, but they’re winning. The only reason I doubted them was because of their play against the Heat (Heat almost won 3 of the 5 games). Anyways, I do not know about this match to be honest. If the Magic want to win, they’ll need to stop Rondo. Something that the Cavs couldn’t do, thus resulted in a loss. If the Celtics want to win, it depends on how far Rondo can lead the team.

What do I expect? Well, both of the teams have Finals appearances in the last two years. The Magic have Dwight Howard, maybe Rondo’s kryptonite. Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis cancel out Ray Allen and Paul Pierce. I think the Celtics will pull it out again, in 6. If not, the Magic will win in 5 or 7.. Home court means a lot to the teams in the playoffs. But then again, the Celtics took two in Cleveland. Celtics do have Rondo .. the differencemaker

Wildcard: RONDO!!!!!

Result: Celtics in 6… Orlando in 5 or 7

Western Conference

1. Los Angeles Lakers Vs 3. Phoenix Suns

All I hear are critics say, “Phoenix max potential is Los Angeles playing at their worst.” Now, I don’t necessarily agree with that, I do believe Los Angeles will take Phoenix out. In the game count, is where I don’t know exactly. Remember, Los Angeles couldn’t hang with the Thunder…So I expect Steve Nash, to have the same impact that Rondo has on the Celtics. If the Lakers want to win, they’ll need to stop Nash. If the Suns want to win, they’ll need to play big and stop Pau and Bynum. Look for Amare to have trouble in the paint..

I believe the Lakers will win. They will win in 5..maybe 6.. The possibility of the Suns beating the Lakers, I would say, is similar to what the Celtics did to the Cavs. They’ll need Kobe to trip as hard and bad as LBJ.

Wildcard : Leandro “the Blur” Barboso

Result: Lakers in 5.

On another note, my rule book needs to get trimmed down.. I think there is a difference between Rules and Common law.. so I'll be looking to change that.. Finals are here, so I don't expect to be doing anything but studying until Tuesday Night.  Woot Woot.

Even though Finals are here, I expect to watch Robin Hood this weekend.  Robin Hood was my favorite movie (with Kevin Costner).  We'll see if it's as good as that one.  I expect it should be, saying Gladiator was such a great movie.

On another note, I got rid of Facebook.  It will be for a good while.  Maybe all of summer, or forever.  Rule number 10: Social networking is not the solution. Haha
Anyways, If you want good mixes, check out www.babyyu.com. This guy is off the hook..

NBA AWARDS 2010

-->
NBA Awards

I swear I wrote one of these this year, but I guess I’m mistaken.  Well, since I did it last year, I might as well do it this year too..

MVP : Lebron James

I think Lebron is better than last year.. but you wouldn’t see that.  He is just as dominant this year as he was last year.  And he showed us why as he led the Cavaliers to a 61-21 finish despite losing Shaq for 2 months and Delonte West for a couple games.  He saw his point average increase by 1.3 ppg, and his assist number increase significantly by 1.4 apg.  Although his rebounding numbers dropped from 7.3 to 7, and his blocks decrease from 1.2 to 1.0, he is still a surrounding force on both, the offensive and defensive end.

There is nobody in the NBA better than this man.  Yes, I know, even my boy D.Wade won’t be able to obtain the season’s MVP this year.  I think his best shot was last year, where he was toppled by Lebron.  It’s almost unfair to play with someone so dominant.
Actual: LBJ X 2
Rookie of the Year

If I had to choose, it’d be Stephen Curry.  But it’s not up to me, it’s up to those media people.  I don’t necessarily disagree with Tyreke Evan’s achievement of Rookie of the Year, but think it should be up for debate.  Although Tyreke achieved the 20-5-5 stat as only the third rookie next to Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson, I don’t think Stephen Curry gets enough credit.  As said when the draft occurred, Stephen Curry showed me his improvement from college to the NBA.  Consistency wise, Tyreke has been the most consistent rookie.  But what about statistically wise and chemistry wise?  Tyreke got a lot of media coverage when the Kings were 14-14, something that didn’t’ happen in awhile after the season started.  But, that was when Kevin Martin went out with an injury and it was ‘Reke’s’ Team.  When Kevin Martin came back from injury, the Kings struggled to win a game, going on a 1-12 losing streak. During that streak, he had stats like (PPG, APG, RPG) 15-3-0 against the Heat in a 115-85 loss, and 19-2-4 loss to the Magic, 4-7-2 in a loss to Charlotte.  And in the beginning of the season, before Martin’s injury, we saw Evan’s go 10-2-3, 6-6-2, and 3-4-2.  Of course, Tyreke’s had his share of games, including a triple double (19-10-10) against the Raptors.  He had a game winning basket against the Nuggets.

Why do I choose Stephen Curry?

Statistically wise and chemistry wise, Stephen Curry outperformed Tyreke Evans.  How is it that Stephen Curry could play with a more dominant, ball-hog, shooter like Monta Ellis, and still get his own, all while Tyreke Evans couldn’t play consistently with a shooter, Kevin Martin.  How is it that Stephen Curry played with a D-League roster, yet still led his team to a better win percentage than Tyreke Evans.  I mean, it was only by one game.  Statistically wise, Curry averaged a better shooting percentage from the field, three-point range and free-throw.  He also averaged more steals and assists than Evans.  The blocks and turnovers between the two were the same (Evans .4, .Curry .2 and 3.0, 3.1) respectively.  The only thing Curry failed to get were points, and I guess that’s his fault for getting his team involved.

Curry did all of this in less time (average of a minute) than Evans.  He also did it 2 shots less than Evans.  Other then that, Curry won in all stats besides points and rebounds.  He lost to Evans by 3 points, and .5 rebounds.  Stephen Curry also beat Tyreke Evans to the punch with the Triple Double line.  Curry had 36-13-10 and 3 steals.  Compared to Evan’s 19-10-10..My oh my.  Curry best stat games were  27-14-8- and 7 steals and 42-9-8- and 2 steals and one block..  Evans best game were 29-11-9 and 2 steals and 25-9-11- and 0 steals and no blocks.

Watching the two players, you could tell that Tyreke was more mature.  He wanted the ball to be in his hands while the game was on the line.  But what are you going to do when you have no other star on your team?  We already know that Tyreke Evans couldn’t play with Kevin Martin, resulting the trade of Martin.  When Stephen Curry played, he had to make sure his star, Monta Ellis, got everything he wanted.

Record wise and statistically wise, I think Stephen Curry deserves to be Rookie of the Year.  He played 80 games to meet his average, while Evans played 72 games.  Curry also played with more D-league teammates than any other person.  I think if Evans didn’t reach the 20-5-5 mark, it’d be a huge debate over ROY.  But you can’t argue with stats.  Since everyone had Evans in their mind all year, I tip my hat to Evans.
Actual: Tyreke Evans

Sixth Man of the Year

Jamal Crawford will win this years ROY.  He had game winners while averaging 18 ppg this season.  Last years champ, Jason Terry averaged 3 points less than he did the year prior.  Jamal Crawford is a huge lift for the Atlanta Hawks and led the team to a third seed playoff spot.
Actual: Jamal Crawford
Defensive Player of the Year

Dwight Howard.  No contest here either.  Lebron didn’t block as much this year, although there were probably more highlights of him doing it this year than last.  Howard averaged 18.3 ppg, 13.2 repg, and 2.8 blocks this season.  His stats are lower than the year prior, but his team also got better offensively.  I didn’t see anyone else besides LBJ taking the DPOY, but his stats weren’t as good as Howard’s.
Actual: Dwight Howard

Coach of the Year

I’d say Nate Mcmillan.  Scott Brooks deserves a lot of credit, leading his young Thunder to a 50-win season and a playoff berth.  But Nate McMillan deserves a better credit, leading an injured-plagued season to 50 wins as well.  Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook seem like a better, explosive, duo compared to the Brandon Roy and Lamarcus Aldridge.  Durant also helped the Thunder with his league leading 30 ppg.  McMillan had less to work with and Brandon Roy missed 17 games.  The Trailblazers were also without Joe Pryzbila and Greg Oden for most of the season.

I also think that Scott Skiles deserves a lot of credit too.  He led the Bucks to a playoff berth as well, with a rookie Point guard, and without Michael Redd.

Keys to the Playoffs Round 1.
This years playoffs are very enticing as both the east and west have 16 great teams fighting for one championship.  Unlike last year, all the teams in the playoffs this year are at least .500.  The last team to obtain their playoff berth was Chicago, who used all 82 games for positioning.  The last win of the season resulted in their playoff berth, knocking out Toronto.  Since this is the first year in awhile where all teams in both conferences finished above .500, it will be a great first round…  On top of that, the western conference was such a close race with 2nd through 8th being within 5 games.

Eastern Conference

1 Cleveland vs 8 Chicago
This is the best team in the NBA vs the worst team in the playoffs.  Cleveland is one of the deepest teams in the playoffs, with a starting lineup that includes Shaquille O’neal, Lebron James, Mo Williams, Anothony Parker, and Antawn Jamison.  To back them up, Anderson Varejao, Zydrunas Illgauskas, Jamario Moon, Daniel Gibson, J.J Hickson, Leon Powe, and Delonte West.  Who are they up against?  I’d say, Joakim Noah, Luol Deng, and Derrick Rose.  What’s interesting to see is the Bulls make the playoffs despite losing 10 games in a row in the second half of the season.  Keys for the Cavs to win, containing Derrick Rose.  If D. Rose gets the entire team involved, it’ll be a problem.  But of course, every problem has a solution, and that’s Lebron James.  If anything happens for D. Rose, LBJ will stop him. Haha
Cleveland will win this series.  I think the Bulls might have a chance to steal one at home in game three, but I expect the Cavs to re-evaluate that loss and come back to take the series in 5.  Derrick  Rose is on the same team as D-Wade for the Heat, their team will go as far as their star carries them.  Lebron James honestly, does not even need to play for the Cavs to take this first round.
Wild Cards:  Cleveland Cavaliers: Mo Williams, Chicago Bulls: Their Bench
Result: Cavs in 5
Actual: Cavs in 5
2. Orlando Magic vs 7 Charlotte Bobcats
Looking at the Orlando Magic roster, I think they are as stacked as the Cleveland Cavs.  I’m a huge fan of Matt Barnes and Jason Williams.  Jameer Nelson and Vince Carter need to have a huge series to push for the wins.  Dwight Howard should be decent since Tyson Chandler and Tyrus Thomas are great on the defensive side.  In order for the Magic to win, they’ll need great team play and knock down threes.  In order for the Bobcats to win, Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson need to have monster games.  The Bobcats are a well-defensive minded team, so they’ll have a chance to try and hold the Magic’s fire power.

I expect the Orlando Magic to win.  I think they have too much offensive firepower for the Bobcats to stop them.  I like the Bobcats defense, but Tyrus Thomas is sporadic and Tyson Chandler hasn’t healed from his injuries.  The trade in the offseason was an excellent trade…last season.. but Chandler’s aging and his health is diminishing.  If Gerald Wallace and Stephen Jackson can contribute half of the teams offense and defense, they’ll get a game or two.  But overall, I expect the Magic in 5.
Wild Cards: Orlando Magic : Michael Pietrus and Vince Carter Charlotte Bobcats: Tyrus Thomas and Stephen Jackson
Result: Orlando in 5
Actual:Orlando in 4
3. Atlanta Hawks vs 6. Milwaukee Bucks
The Atlanta Hawks surprisingly made a late-season push to enter the playoffs at the three seed.  Luckily for them, they don’t have to face the Miami Heat like last year.  I think their chances of passing the first round are higher playing the injured Bucks rather than a Dwyane Wade.  The Bucks have made  a surprising playoff run behind Andrew Bogut and Brandon Jennings. But the season-injury to Bogut, lessens the chances of the Bucks winning.  This would have been a great match up if Bogut was in tact, but since there’s no Bogut, Mbah Moute must be the difference maker.  The Bucks need to fill the void of Bogut with Moute and veteran Kurt Thomas.  If the Hawks are going to win, they will have Joe Johnson and Josh Smith carry them.  Al Horford will be great against non-Bogut players.  If the Bucks want to win, they’ll need consistency from John Salmons and Brandon Jennings.  Brandon Jennings must carry his team during the rookie season, like he did in the beginning of the season.
I expect the Hawks to win and advance since they have more experience than the Bucks. The Bucks aren’t that great of a team without Bogut and they’ll need players like Delfino and Stackhouse to step up their game.  Oh I might add the Hawks have 6th man to be,  Jamal Crawford.
Wild Cards : Atlanta Hawks: Mike Bibby (where have you been all season?) Milwaukee Bucks: Mbah a Moute and Kurt Thomas.  Brandon Jennings consistency..will he show up as the 30 point scorer or the 2 point scorer.
Result: Atlanta hasn’t won on the road according to ESPN in the last 10 years except for once last year.  I expect them to change that, and win in the injured Bucks.   Atlanta in 5.

4. Boston Celtics vs 5. Miami Heat
Ah yes, my boy D Wade vs the senior citizens of the NBA.  I would’ve preferred the Heat playing the Hawks just because it’s more of an even match.  But Boston lost its last several games to fall back to the fourth seed.  Miami is still helpless beyond Wade, and this season has seen Mario Chalmers fall to the Bench.  Beasley had a better season than his rookie season, but still is inconsistent.  Boston has struggled, but is 3-0 against the Heat this season.  All of the games were close, including an –almost game winning shot by Wade (only for Boston to tie on a .7 shot to send the game to O.T).  For the Boston Celtics to win will depend on Rondo’s game play.  Rondo gets the team involved, and will find Paul Pierce and Ray Allen for shots.  Honestly, Rondo can run in circles and win the series for the Celtics.  I might add that Boston has the deepest veterans bench beside the Cavs.  In order for the Heat to win, the Heat must have , according to my cousin“40 points from Wade, 20 from O’neal, 20 from Beasley every game.” Even though that’s dramatic and extensive, it’s true.. At least the Wade and Beasley part.  The Heat will need more help besides Dwyane Wade…meaning Chalmers, Beasley, O’neal, Richardson need double digits in every game.  I like Udonis Haslem and I like Joel Anthony as the only other consistent Heat players.
I wanted to say the Heat in 7 just because I can’t oppose D-Wade.  But beside being a D Wade fan, I’ll say the truth since I’m a realist.  Celtics will win this series due to their bench and experience…This is a championship team who struggled this season, only because they didn’t care.  Now that the post season is here, they should look like their championship form minus K.G’s knee.
Wildcard: Boston Celtics: Big Baby Davis  Miami Heat: Their team minus Wade, Haslem, and Anthony
Result: Boston in 6.  I don’t see anyone besides Wade and Haslem for scoring. Q might have a game , O’neal might have one too.. Beasley might have one.. but they need 4. Not likely.

Western Conference

1. Los Angeles Lakers vs 8. Oklahoma City Thunder
Like I said in the intro, the 2-8 seeds are misleading.  The Thunder lost to the Trailblazers to fall to number 8.  This matchup will be one of the better ones outside the Heat and Celtics.  I say this because Kevin Durant is one of the best up and coming players who just won his first (youngest) scoring champion.  But then there’s LA and their defender, Ron Artest.  And if he fails, there’s Kobe Bryant.  If the Lakers want to win, they’ll need Artest to shut down Durant, and their big’s to play consistently.  I’m not a fan of Andrew Bynum, but Pau will support the both of em.  Lamar Odom needs to be the 6th man he used to be.  In order for the OKC Thunder to win, the Lakers will need to break down. Haha just kidding. The Thunder will need to push it, and who else does that better then Russell Westbrook..one of my favorite new players this year.  K.D and Kobe cancel each other out,  so Westbrook needs to carry the load.  Also the Thunder’s big men need to suppress Pau and Bynum.
The Lakers should win this series.  They are the returning champions, and not only do they have offense, but defense as well. Their frontcourt is huge minus D.Fisher (which can be replaced by Lamar Odom).  The Thunder can only win if they use their speed (age) cause the Lakers can’t hang.  I also heard Kobe’s injured..
Wildcards: Los Angeles Lakers: Shannon Brown and Lamar Odom Oklahoma City Thunder: Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green, OKC as well
Result: Lakers in 6
Actual: Lakers in 6
2. Dallas Mavericks vs 7 San Antonio Spurs
Well, last year the Mavs knocked out the injured Spurs.  This year, the Spurs are back and better with less injuries than last.  Spurs bring experience and poise, where Mavs have too much talent.  The trade that brought Haywood, Butler, and Stevenson mid-season, makes them deeper.  But overall, does it make em better? There’s only one ball.. I say, no. But I’ve never been a Mavs fan.  I’ve always been a Spurs fan.  If the Mavs want to win they’ll need consistency from Butler and Terry.  They are the keys to the wins.  Dirk and Kidd will get theirs, and Haywood and Dampier are defensive centers.  If the Spurs want to win, they’ll need their big three to have huge games.  I also like George Hill , and Dejuan Blair,a lot, both who will be Parker and Ginobli, Duncan and Mcdyess back up.  Tony Parker’s health will also have an impact.  I almost forgot, Richard Jefferson needs to be great, that’s why they got him last summer.
I will stick with my Spurs to win this series.  Mavs are good, but can they win on the road? I know the Spurs can, consistently too.  It’ll depend on the play of Richard Jefferson  and Tim Duncan.  The Mavs have defensive centers to stop the paint play from Parker and Duncan.
Wildcards: Dallas Mavericks : Caron Butler San Antonio Spurs: Richard Jefferson
Result: Spurs in 6..or 7.
Actual: Spurs in 6

3. Phoenix Suns vs 6. Portland Trailblazers
Funny how the 6th seeds in both conference are missing key players.. Bogut was a huge injury to the Bucks, but non bigger than the Trailblazers missing Brandon Roy.  Brandon Roy is the 4th best shooting guard behind Wade, James, and Bryant.  Actually, he might be five, thinking about K.D.  Not only is Roy injured, but so is Greg Oden.  The Suns have played defense this year to the number three seed.  I don’t think the Trailblazers can win against the Suns if they don’t have Brandon Roy.  If the Trailblazers want to win, they’ll need to play defense against the high-scoring Suns.  If the Suns want to win, they’ll need to make shots, and have big games from Richardson and Barbosa.
I will stick with the Suns.  No Brandon Roy means they’re not a 6th seed team. Steve Nash has had a stellar season and Amare’s playing with anger.
Wildcards: Phoenix Suns- their CENTERs Portlant Trailblazer: Rudy Fernandez and Jerryd Bayless
Result: Suns in 6.
Actual: Suns in 6
4. Denver Nuggets vs 5. Utah Jazz
This is an interesting matchup.  Actually, it’s the same as the Spurs and Mavs.  I like the Jazz.  Denver made its surprise last year, and yes that was last year.  This year, they’re without George Karl, and their X factor J.R Smith is still inconsistent.  In order for the Nuggets to win, they’ll need J.R Smith to have monster games.  Carmelo is one of the purest scorers in the league and Billups is Mr. Bigshot.  But that’s all the Nuggets have. And they’re against Boozer and Williams.  If the Nuggets want to win, Nene and J.R must have monster games.  If the Jazz want to win , Mehmet Okur needs to come out and take advantage of Nene and Martin.  Boozer’s health is also in consideration.
The Jazz will put up a fight, and I think Deron Williams will take advantage of whoever guards him.  He is the second best point guard in the league..maybe first since CP3 can’t shoot as well as Williams.  The Nuggets don’t have a pure leader like George Karl, so it’ll be a tough series.  I expect the Jazz to win behind their experienced and respected coach.
Wildcards: Denver Nuggets: Kenyon Martin and J.R Smith Utah Jazz: Mehmet Okur
Result: Jazz in 6.. Nuggets in 7.
Actual: Jazz in 6

NBA and School lifee update.

Sorry, No pictures for this post. Just wanted to update this thing since I have 3 posts in the last 2 months.  School is hectic right now, haven't had time to shoot photos.  Instead, I've been working on a resume and cover letter for English 398.  For my gang's class, I have had to research a gang-related article for the local area, read My Bloody Life : The Making of a Latin King, and write an 8 page paper on it.  In my terrorism and counter-terrorism class, I have a 6 page mid-term paper about a terrorist group, and a group project of a similar paper.  For my race class, I have weekly internet exercises and a 3 page paper due.  And lastly, I have an Anthropology paper due on syphilis.  Fun, yes I know.

I recommend, My Bloody Life : The Making of a Latin King.  I hate reading, but that book got me hooked.  I even got the sequel, My Bloody Life : The unMaking of a Latin King.

As for the NBA trades...disappointed the Heat didn't get Amare.  The Kings finally got rid of Kevin Martin.  Didn't get that much, but hey we got rid of Martin and Rodriguez.  Speaking of Rodriguez, Ashley Rodriguez from Boston, on American Idol, is HOT. And she can sing. Lol.  The Wizards traded away half the team, to get nothing but Josh Howard and Al Thornton.  Good pickups.  The Cavs were dominating without Jamison, and now they'll be awesome. Just be patient cause there's a 3 game losing streak with him.  These things take time.  Look for them to give the Magic, Celtics, and maybe Lakers, a run...

Rockets traded Tmac for Kevin Martin.  That's the upside, I think.  But they lost Carl Landry, a very upgraded Dejuan Blair.  Okay maybe not that big of an upgrade.  If you think about that, the Kings had a chance to get Blair...Yes, instead we got Brockman who?  Brockman upsets offenses at time, but Blair would've been a better pick. And he has no ACL's..Sav! The Celtics kept their big three, gave up Eddie House, and got Nate Robinson. Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley say it's a good upgrade from House, but I don't know about that one... And House proved in the New York loss that he could score (24 points).

Financially, the Jazz traded Corey Brewer to ? for nothing...Don't know if I'd agree.  The Bobcats got some depth in Tyrus Thomas.. and the Trailblazes got a big man..Hopefully, he doesn't follow Oden and Pryzbilla..

New NBA favorites for this year: Rajon Rondoooo, Dejuan Blair, and Kevin Durant.

What to watch: Charles Barkley and Kenny "the Jet" Smith.  Hilarious.
Song of the week. Chris Brown ft Pleasure P - Can't let you Go

Quote of the week . " I went to the woods because I wish to live deliberately to front only the essential things of life and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."- Henry David Thoreau

And that's the Stat us of the NBA.

"Welcome to your KODAK moment Anderson Varejao."

"Wade, Oh The Facial, Yes and the Foul."

Can you Imagine Marv Albert practicing his lines in front of a mirror back the day when he was a new broadcaster. Haha. If you missed the game tonight, that is unfortunate. I missed some parts of it, but at least got to see the main event. Sure, D-Wade lost, but he put up some fighting numbers. The Heat are still getting better, and he dunked on Anderson Varejao. That dunk is dunk of the year, kind of reminds me when he dunked on Emeka Okafor last year...

Anyways, both are freakin sick. While most speculate on if LBJ joins D Wade to form one of the best duo's ever in Miami next season, another all-time great duo was in the arena. By that, I mean Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. D-Wade also sported the new and up coming 25th Anniversary Jordan's due out in Feb. Personally, I'm not hyped, but I guess we'll see when they're released.

I missed some of the game due to the other National Game on TV, and it wasn't basketball. The Niners played on NFL TV for those who don't follow. And must I remind you from two years ago, Patrick Willis is a BEAST. Manny Lawson, I was also a fan of him his rookie year (one prior to Willis's entrance). The 49ers are horrible on offense, only scoring 10 points...Even after taking away, or being given, 5 Interceptions by Jay Cutler. Somebody Fire that man. Hopefully, the offense can get it going or else there's not gonna be no post season this year.

Oh and Michael Crabtree is still impressin.. especially with the out of bound catch. Sorry, since it wasn't a catch, I don't spot it on Youtube. haha

Another week

Another week passed by. Might I add that next week, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 comes out (tuesday). Haha, it hit me when my classmates said, "If I'm not in class next Tuesday, I'm probably at home playing Modern Warfare 2 since it comes out next week." Haha. Yeah since I have nothing else to do besides hang out with a blog, I've started playing video games like a geek. haha Oh well, I guess I missed the last 6 years of being a Teenage Geek. For those who don't know, check it out!

On another basketball update... Cp3 is a sick shooter now, shooting high percentages from beyond the Ark. He managed to find some help from Emeka Okafor and David West, but the team as a whole, are still struggling. I swear the Hornets just have washed up Kings lying on their Roster.Okay maybe not washed up, but a trade among them kinda relationship. Look at it, Byron Scott, Peja, Bobby Brown, Ike Idogu, Sean Marks, Darius Songaila...just this year. And then Desmond Mason, Bobby Jackson and Bonzi Wells in previous years. Seems to me that, someone is following someone. I think it's more Hornets following Sac...which shouldn't happen because SAC is so weak sauce...They have been the last 5 years, and now look at New Orleans..Struggling to even be a playoff Team. I always thought the Hornets had the better lineups, just couldn't stay healthy. Sometimes I think their chemistry is off too. Mo Pete, James Posey, and Peja, are dead shooters. They traded for a healthier Emeka, yet wasted Rasual Butler...Doesn't make much sense to me. But hell, neither does Geoff Petrie.

I guess I'm just extending the talk about the Kings from the Sacbee Article/Comment Forum found here. People on that are ridiculous, stating the Newspaper Article Comments part is a "Fans Forum."  Some people are just beyond imaginable.  It's good to be a true fan, but it's also good to know when it's time to jump ship.  I'm not saying give-up on the Kings, but stop wasting your money on em.  They're ranked 10th in Attendance Prices for Home games at 60 bucks average. The Nba itself average ticket price is 50... Among the top 10, the Kings are the only ones with the losing record.  Lakers, Knicks, Boston, Chicago, and Mavericks are understandable for being there.  They're good and in large Cities.  Joe and Gavin Maloof are freakin rippin people. Thank God my dad stopped buying his season tickets this season.

Blame the management.  Geoff Petrie was a success when he brought over the Fab Five and plus some.  But since then he's done horrible.  Donte Green, Spencer Hawes, Kenny Thomas, Sean May, Desmond Mason, Ide Udoka, Andre(DUI) Nocioni all horrible pick ups on contracts.  Who'd we lose for them or let go for no good reason and we should've kept? Chris Webber, Mike Bibby, Ron Artest (Some might say Peja), Brad Miller, Eddie House, Bonzi Wells, Justin Williams, Ronnie Price, Dahntay Jones,  Rick Adelman, and John Salmons were among the ones lost for no reason.  The ones we didn't even need, yet we paid them- Bobby Brown, Quincy Douby, Vitaly Potapenko, Mo Taylor, Jason Hart, Mikki Moore, Beno Udrih. Jesus, ever since that C-webb Trade, that's probably all the players we went through, and most we haven't kept.  Anyways, Kings Fans are biased on that paper, and it's quite irritating.

Kevin Martin is a good scorer because he's efficient.  But that doesn't mean anything if you don't dish the ball, get assists, or even a block once in a while.  He's 6'7 so blocks aren't too hard, saying D Wade and Delonte West average almost a block a game under 6'4.  Monta Ellis passes the ball more than Kevin Martin.  Amazingly, he chased 11 rebounds down yesterday.  Yet the Kings couldn't hold on to a 4th quarter lead.  Kevin Martin will never be a Superstar, maybe an All star.  He'll be no better than Peja Stojakavic, and has a little more way to go to catch Mitch Richmond.  Oh and btw, These forum King Fans said that Kevin Martin is favorable than Ray Allen, Tmac, Reggie Miller, and Brandon Roy.  Haha.  Oh and I almost forgot, "Kevin Martin is just like Kobe, without a team, and without D."  Dude, I'm not even a Kobe fan, but Kobe is one of the most complete, clutchest, closer, Basketball Superstar Player since MJ.  LBJ and Dwyane follow, but to say Kevin Martin is just as good, without D and a team? Those people are trippin.  I'd take Steph Curry over Kevin Martin, hell I'd take him over Kevin and Tyreke.

As for Noc's DUI, he was probably drinkin his piss-poor life/trade from last year.  Hell it must've been a lot better being a Bull than a King.  Oh well.  Good to see Mike Bibby come back and hit some important shots down the stretch.  Kings fans think he's comin back when we become a Post Season team again, like Bobby did.  Haha. Sometimes I wonder if they're playing fantasy ball or 2k10 and think their teams really are gonna shape.  Reality is, Kings are either moving, or they'll suck for the next 3-4 years, unless they land some big name this coming off-season.

D-Wade beasted last night against the Wiz's on National Tv.  Cp3 beasted against  the Mavs too, on National Tv.  Way to go boys, Way to go.  Q rich might look like a fantasy pick up...and haha where on earth is Michael Beas(t)ley? He's got issues dude. Anyways. That's it for now.

Keep your Eyes Posted!

Congrats to Dwayne Wade on his 10,000 points Milestone.  This is what you call Superstar.

This Wed, he will be on National TV, ESPN at 7 P.M Eastern Standard Time, against Gilbert Arenas and the Wizards. I look forward to that matchup, although I'll miss the first half due to school.
On more news, Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings, is injured and listed Day to Day.

Anthony Randolph is still trying find his All-Star caliber, but can't blame him cause Nellie ain't playin him!.. Same thing with Anthony Morrow. Gallinari is a steal pick up right now, hitting 16 3's this season, including 8 in one outing. The Italian Knick can shoot!
I'm debating if I should pick up Courtney Lee, Peja Stojakavic, and/or Kenyon Martin...and drop either, Travis Outlaw, Yi Jinilian, and/or Anthony Morrow.

49ers Lost. Raiders Lost. Tom Brady is on the Bye. Redskins are on the Bye. Thank God the Ravens smashed the Broncos....49ers could've won, but didn't score the 2nd half of the Indy game, to leave Indy undefeated. Raiders, they just suck. Tom Brady's comin back from London. Joe Flacco is the man!

Celtics are undefeated, with Rondo signing an extension, 55 Million for 5 years. Jesus, just think, the Kings could've had him, instead of Quincy Who? Douby. Great, just Great. Kevin MArtin is still proving me right when I say, "Worst Clutch" performer. My dad was on Fox News too.

(Around the 540 Mark)
He had more coverage time, but I suppose they didn't like his responses. This is a revised/edited version. In the previous version, my dad answered questions of what should've been happening during the time of the crash, Along with what "might've" occured to cause the crash. And lastly, he finishes with, "slim chances" when asked what were the chances of survival. He said it with a straight face...I bet the family members are disgusted with my dad.

Let’s talk Sports!

NBA Start of the Season<

Cleveland is 0-2 ! Wow. Boston 2-0 and Lakers 2-0 , big surprise there. New Orleans aka Cp3 needs some back up cause the Spurs just smashed them.  I like Cp3's sense of humor, "We were supposed to go 82-0 but we knew it wasn't feasible." lol. Atlanta's Al Horford put up better numbers than Dwight Howard (only cause Superman didn't play 2 quarters).  Both Florida Teams won.  Kings Lost, big surprise there.  Warriors lost, cause Morrow and Randolph didn't play at all. Thanks Nellie.  Utah lost to Denver, Philly got smashed by 3's.  mmmHmm.

Ah so the NBA started this past week.  Great to have those games back.  Dwyane Wade, hopefully will return with a stellar MVP performance season.  He had a quiet 26-5-5 over the New York Knicks.  Hopefully his shooting percentage will go up.

Hometown:

The Sacramento Kings look horrible, with or without their whole team, with or without their rookie, Tyreke Evans, with or without Francisco Garcia, with or without stellar performances from Jason Thompson, Spencer Hawes, and Kevin Martin.  They lost to Okalahoma.

Other Hometown:
The Washington Wizards, the other supposed “hometown” city team is starting to look terrific.  Gilbert Arenas looks back to his “hibachi” form, while the rest of the team seems to be upgraded with Mike Miller and Randy Foye.  Injuries will be a part of their outcome.

Fantasy Teams 1                                                           Fantasy Team 2
Pre-Drafted                                                                      Live Draft

Yes, I know, similar teams.   Nellie needs to play Anthony Morrow cause I think he has the potential in being Most Improved Player.  Yi Jianilian is also in that category.  Hopefully, Courtney Lee wasn’t a bust cause he’s gonna get a lot of playing time in New Jersey.  Travis Law was picked because one monster game.  Troy Murphy was probably the worst 4th pick of a draft, EVER.  Mario Chalmers better step up his game as a 2nd year player, oh did I say I like the Heat? And their back court.  Derrick Rose is back for a better year, or at least I hope.

NFL

Hometown:

49ers look to beat the unbeaten Colts this weekend.  Good luck with that and your new quarterback, Alex Smith.  They did, however, look well last Sunday- Second half, against the Texans.  But it wasn’t enough.  The Crabtree looks like we shouldn’t have doubted him, nor should’ve held out on him.  We should’ve paid him, maybe? We’ll soon find out if he was lucky last week, or if he’s really as good as he says.  He looks kinda good though.

Raiders, you all need to go get a quarterback who wants to win. I think they should borrow Shaun Hill for a little bit, since their own QB, Jamarcus Russell, can’t even take blame for their losing.  He only takes blame for the wins. Haha How homo.

Other Hometown:

My boy Joe Flacco, also looks stellar this season.  Better than his rookie campaign (which was amazing).  The Baltimore Ravens need to step up their game just a tad, just because they’ve been losing by hairs to great post season teams.  They face Denver’s undefeated record this weekend, and are 3rd back in their division to the Bengals and Steelers.

Haha, I don’t even consider this a hometown team.  They’re in the same boats as the Raiders.  I never claimed Raiders either, but anyways.  The Washington Redskins are such a big disappointment.  I think they have extraordinary pieces like Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, and Merryweather. But something is not right.  Jason Cambell > Demarcus Russell but they’re still struggling.

My boy Tom Brady looks to be getting that 16-1 form again.  Hopefully he’ll do 7 TDS coming back from the Bye in next week (not this weekend, BYE).
